PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKERS          (PSW Certificate required)

Position Summary:     

This position provides personal care in a professional, caring and compassionate manner to elderly clients, in their own home, in a manner which is conducive to independence, comfort, safety and privacy.

 

Position Duties and Responsibilities:

  • provides personal care as outlined in the client’s individual care plan which includes showers, sponge baths, assistance with dressing and hygiene, etc.
  • provides medication assistance through the blister pack system
  • effectively communicates with supervisor, other staff and clients through written and verbal means to reduce misunderstanding and to promote efficiency, e.g. communication book, Occurrence Reports, time slips, team meetings, shift change
  • performs delegated acts
  • provides meal preparation/grocery shopping, bed making and other household duties as needed
  • conducts safety checks of clients and advises supervisor of potential client problems
  • effectively serves palliative care, mental health and dementia clients
  • provides emotional and physical support to clients
  • handles medical emergencies
  • reorganizes care plan for clients on return from hospital in off hours
  • performs other duties as assigned
  •  may serve on agency committees and task groups 

Position Requirements:

Education

·         Personal Support Worker certificate

·         current First Aid/CPR certificates; WHMIS trained

  •   ongoing in-service training

Technical Requirements

  • ability to apply sound judgment when dealing with established practices and procedures
  • understanding of the aging process
  • ability to perform a one person transfer
  • ability to maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to Code of Ethics and Privacy Policy
  • knowledge and adherence to good health and safety practices and infection control protocols
  • knowledge and adherence to  Peel Senior Link Policies and Procedures 

Mental and Physical Demands & Working Conditions:

  • works independently and as a team member
  • works extra shifts on short notice
  • works holidays and weekends
  • physical handling and transferring of clients
  • potential behavioural issues with clients
  • potential clients requiring care with respiratory, digestive and skin infections
  • exposure to urine and feces; exposure to bodily fluids
  • potential exposure to health risks

HOME HELPERS

Position Summary:                 

This position provides general housekeeping duties to elderly clients, in their own home, in a caring and compassionate manner.

 

Position Duties:

·         performs general household duties for the client as outlined in the clients individual care plan which includes the following but not limited to:

o        changes and makes client’s bed

o        dusts and vacuums

o        washes and mops floors

o        laundry

o        cleans kitchen and the bathroom

o        cleans ovens, stoves, refrigerators and microwaves

o        cleans and tidies cupboards and closets

o        disposes of garbage; recycles

·         effectively communicates and understands through written and verbal means, e.g. communication book, time slips and reporting changes to site supervisors

·         performs other duties as assigned by supervisor

 

Position Requirements:

      Education

·         High School Diploma an asset

Technical Requirements

·         ability to perform routine work with detailed procedures

·         ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in English

·         possess general knowledge and understanding of working with seniors

·         ability to maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to Code of Ethics and Privacy Policy

·         knowledge and adherence to good health and safety practices

·         knowledge and adherence to Peel Senior Link Policies and Procedures

  • hours worked may be reduced if senior not at home
  • works with cleaning products
  • physically demanding using a variety of body mechanics
